Where do the next generation of leaders come from? Is there a well trodden path? There is an urgent need in social care and health to bring on emerging leaders and encourage them to take the next steps in their leadership journey.
I love asking people about their career and the different roles they've had. Why they moved from one job to the next. Often, people who are in leadership roles come to them through all sorts of different routes.
Some people don't even see themselves as leaders, but others might see it in them. It can be more about who they are rather than what skills they have, not to say that skills aren't important, but values and attitudes, the kind of person they are, the sorts of relationships they have, can say more about a future leader and the culture they create than anything.
What sorts of qualities should we look for in emerging leaders? Here are some ideas.
Kind - they are compassionate towards others, quick to listen and help out.
Initiative - they have innovative approaches to problem solving and move things forward.
Adaptability - they can handle change and are open to new ideas.
Willingness to learn - and are teachable, seek out opportunities for growth.
Drive - they will often take the lead naturally in a situation demonstrating leadership qualities.
Collaborative - thrive in and value teams, seeking to include others and valuing their input and opinion.
Handle setbacks - learning and growing from these experiences.
